At the 4th ENC in 2010, Marieke Schuurmans took over the presidency of the European Nursing Congress Foundation.

Schuurmans is professor of nursing science at UMC Utrecht. She also holds the position of Chief Nursing Officer, the most important independent advisor on nursing issues to the Dutch health minister. She worked over ten years as a clinical nurse specialist in geriatric medicine and is an expert in complex nursing care for older people. In her PhD study she developed the Delirium Observation Screening (DOS) Scale which is nowadays part of regular nursing care in Dutch hospitals and which has been translated in numerous languages. Her current research focuses on daily functioning of older people with multimorbidity. Marieke Schuurmans is an ardent advocate of the broadly trained bachelor nurse and is involved in many innovative projects.
